Using air abrasion in the operatory is a clinical technique I do routinely. In my previous curator journal I discussed a piece of small equipment that has made this easy and convenient, the Etchmaster. Air abrasion is essential in preparing certain indirect restorative materials for placement with resin based cements such as zirconia. I use air abrasion to clean prepared teeth prior to placement of the final restoration, to clean out occlusal grooves before placing a sealant and more.
