The Diagnostic Wax-Up: Essential To Dental Treatment Planning

Posted on: 07.24.23 | by Phil Gold

Treatment planning allows us to move from a diagnosis to the possibilities that dentistry can provide. A critical step in working through the complex thought process to confirm our treatment plan is being able to actually work on and see the esthetic and functional changes we are envisioning. This process of bringing the pieces together is called the diagnostic workup. Today this process can be done digitally or in the analog world with wax. In this webinar, we will discuss the thought process of a diagnostic work-up, and then introduce an easy-to-use technique to "wax-up" the case as your first test run.

Learning Objectives

  • Be able to evaluate the patient's current function and esthetics.
  • Improve your communication with the laboratory.
  • Involve both hygienist and patient in developing a custom, maintenance plan for long-term, case success.

About Phil Gold

Phil Gold, MCDT has been an active technician in Dentistry for almost 50 years and is still loving it! He is a second-generation technician; his father opened their lab in 1946. Phil's daughter Katie joined the lab 24 years ago to create a third generation carrying on old traditions and making new ones as they care for their clients and patients across the country daily at By Design Dental Studios in Atlanta. Phil attended his first course at Pankey in 1976 and he has made it his home ever since. Over the years he has been a participant, faculty member, advisor, and even served on the Board of Directors. In addition, he has completed courses at the Dawson Academy and Spear Education as well as attended many laboratory meetings. Phil has been a Certified Dental Technician for the last 40 years, recognized by the National Association of Dental Laboratories. He completed his certification in the last of five specialties: ceramics, crown and bridge, partials, dentures, and Implant making him one of only 48 Master Certified Dental Technicians in the world today.
