Of course, every hygienist is more than capable of assessing perio and scaling and polishing teeth. There is also another entire world of where they can put their gifts and talents during the span of a hygiene appointment. When I taught a workshop last week I challenged every hygienist in the room to consider what their appointment would be like fi they had no instruments to use. What could they learn about their patient's desires? Motives? Values? How could they explore together with their patients current conditions and potential operative or restorative dentistry? How could they help their patients become more aware of their own choices? It's a beautiful idea to think about how expansive the role of a hygienist can be if they would only see themselves as a partner in the health of their patients. In truth...the possibilities are endless!
